Ash Wednesday Homily
In his Ash Wednesday homily last week, Archbishop Thabo had the following to say about GBV: “However bad the coronavirus is, at least we know that in time this too shall pass. But Gender-Based Violence, as many people have observed before, is the “hidden pandemic” of our times. It is a long-running disease which remains deeply embedded in our society and is going to take a lot of effort to root out.
As part of the Province’s declaration of Lent as a time to focus on this issue, a course for Lent 2021 entitled “Living Holy and Healthy Relationships” has been developed. It is available on the Church’s website and I warmly commend it to you.
This Lent, let us recommit ourselves to being restorers and repairs of human dignity as we strive for the common good. By including these eternal values into our daily lives, let us condemn violence against women and children with renewed vigour. Please pray without ceasing for the end of this second pandemic that has taken over our country. Just as we can overcome Covid-19, so too can we overcome this scourge if we dedicate as many resources, both spiritually and through collective action, to ending it.”
Matric
We congratulate our matrics on their results and wish them well in the next phase of their life.
Volmoed Youth Leadership Training Course
Some of our young people are in the process of doing this 8 week online course. We look forward to sharing in the fruit of their learnings.
Rector on Leave
I will be on leave from 2-5 March.
Ministry to those who are deaf
Some of you will remember Noni Charles. When I took her funeral last month it was wonderful to see the interpretation that took place for those who are deaf (Mrs Charles had two sons who were deaf). Other siblings of hers and grandchildren were able to sign as part of the interpretation offered to those who attended.
I was reminded of this when a woman who is deaf came to our 9.15 service this last Sunday. It made we wonder if we should try to offer interpretation of parts of our service to those who are deaf. I know some of our parishioners attended signing classes at the Denis Hurley Centre (their café is staffed by people who are deaf; and their tour guide is blind – a great example of the inclusion of people with disabilities) – but not to the level of simultaneous interpretation. I am not aware of any church in the city that provides this. Are there any of our members who could offer this? Or point us to where we could be assisted?
