St Paul’s Epistle 30 September 2021

Dear People of St Pauls

As we end our Season of Creation this Sunday we also begin our focus on stewardship.  “What does the Lord require of you?”

Thank you to all who shared in our Heritage Day service last week.  It was wonderful to see people wearing various traditional outfits.  Language-wise, in our services and in the video (in the liturgy, hymns and peace) we had contributions which included isiXhosa, Northern Sotho, Krio (a language Sierra Leone), Luganda (a language of Uganda), isiZulu, Igbo (a language of Nigeria), siSwati and Lingala (a language of the DRC).  There was request that this expression of diversity in language becomes a more regular feature of our services.

Over the last few months we have been taking photos of those who attend the services  to try to maintain a sense of community among the members of St Pauls.  These pictures are then put on our website and placed on the church’s facebook page. The photos from last week’s Sunday services (and previous weeks) may be found under our gallery .

 Covid-19 and Vaccination Presentation

ACSA has requested each parish appoint a vaccine co-ordinator.  Our co-ordinator is Sinazo Mchiza, a nurse by profession, who will make a presentation at our services this Sunday on Covid-19 and vaccinations.

Weddings for our former assistant priests

Last week Revd Sphamandla Nkabinde got married and next week Revd Mduduzi Mathe is getting married.  We wish God’s blessings on these two former assistant priests of St Pauls and their wives.

Desmond Tutu at 90 on 7th October

Then there is the on-line 11th Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture (at 19.00 on Thursday) with the theme “Speaking truth to power: No future without justice” for which one can register here    It includes inspirational messages of hope from Thuli Madonsela, Graca Machel, Mary Robinson and the Dalai Lama.

Revd Clement Zulu RIP

Retired priest, Revd Clement Zulu, was laid to rest this morning at St Augustine’s, Umlazi.  May his soul rest I peace and rise in gory. We pray too for his widow, Mrs Dudu Zulu and their children and wider family during this time of bereavement.

A Prayer to use for local elections

Creator of all, we come with open hearts to pray for our beloved country as we prepare for the Municipal elections.

Your desire for our country is that we act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. We have seen in our recent history the power of Your Spirit which comes to bring good news to the poor and set the oppressed free.

We pray that your desire for South Africa be pressed upon the hearts of each citizen as we discern how to use our votes to bring hope to all who live in South Africa. We pray that those standing for election know the sacred responsibility they hold for all God’s people, remembering especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

We pray for peace throughout the election period: that candidates will not provoke conflict or use disinformation; and that the South African Police Service and the Independent Electoral Commission will act with courage and integrity. May all involved uphold the values of our hard-won democracy by being honest, impartial and accountable.

And lastly, we pray for the strength and wisdom to keep those elected true to their word and campaign promises. May we not hesitate to speak out when we witness dishonesty, injustice, discrimination or any misuse of power. And may we also be quick to support and uphold those decisions that usher in Christ’s love-filled justice in our beloved country. AMEN (By Rev David Barbour, sent to us by the Denis Hurley Centre)
